Cooperation based on the Agreement on cooperation of 18 April 2000

Area: approx. 63 thousand km²
Population: approx. 560 thousand
Capital: Debrecen

The capital of the Hajdύ-Bihar County is the city of Debrecen (the second largest city in Hungary), which has been the capital of the state twice (in 1849 and 1944).

Together with Bihor County in Romania, the Hajdύ-Bihar County constitutes the Biharia Euroregion.

Fertile loess soils create good conditions and foster the development of agriculture in the region. There are pharmaceutical, medical, sports and food clusters functioning and developing in the region. The region also boasts academic potential, with the University of Debrecen established in 2000 as a result of the merger of 4 universities (its history, however, dates back to 1538).

The Hajdύ-Bihar County is a partner region of the Lubelskie Voivodeship based on the Agreement on Cooperation between the Lubelskie Voivodeship and the Hajdύ-Bihar County, dated 18 April 2000.

Lubelskie Voivodeship together with partners from the Hajdύ-Bihar County have implemented two projects under the INTERREG Europa and INTERREG Central Europe programmes:

  • Smart_watch, the purpose of which is to create a network of sector observatories of intelligent markets facilitating management in the region with knowledge. The partner on the Hungarian side is INNOVA Észak-Alföld (non-profit Development and Innovations Agency with the head office in Debrecen)
  • CLUSTERS3 involving directly the self-government of the Hajdú-Bihar County. The aim of the project is to improve cluster policies included in the competence of regional authorities.

A number of municipalities from the Lubelskie Voivodeship cooperate with partnership municipalities from the Hajdύ-Bihar County (including the city of Lublin – a partnership city of Debrecen). Also, the Lublin Museum and the Déri Museum in Debrecen had long-run and fruitful cooperation for many years.
