Vice-marshal has commemorated the fallen soldiers of the Border Protection Corps

In Mielniki, in the Volyn Oblast (Region) the ceremony was held to commemorate the soldiers of the Border Protection Corps killed in 1939. The event, organised by the General Consulate  of the Republic of Poland in Lutsk, was attended by, among others, the vice-marshal of the Lubelskie Voivodeship Zbigniew Wojciechowski, representatives of of the Luck Division of the State Border Guard of Ukraine, the Bug River Border Guard Unit, General Consulate of the Republic of Poland, the Volyn Regional State Administration, the Volyn Regional Council and the Council of the City of Lutsk.

The ceremony, which took place on 29 September, started with the  ecumenical prayer with particpation of representatives of the roman-catholic and orthodox clergy.

The important element of the event was ‘’Peace Run”, in which youth from Poland and Ukraine had to run the symbolic distance of 1939 metres. The race was completed in the Peace Park situated at the Culture Centre in Mielniki, where the invited guests plant memorial trees every year.

Mielniki is situated approx. 10 kilomentres north of Szack in the Volyn Oblast. In this regions, on 28-30 September 1939, 52nd Rifle Division of the Red Army fought with a group of the Border Protection Corps numbering approx. 4 thousand Polish soldiers under the command of the gen. Wilhelm Orlik Rueckeman.

There is a special war field in the cemetary in Mielniki with resting places for 25 soldiers of the Polish Army and one  officer of the Polish State Police.
