Marshal Jarosław Stawiarski a panellist in the workshop Smart Rail for the EU’s Green Recovery

On 20 October the Marshal of the Lubelskie Voivodeship Jarosław Stawiarski participated in the workshop held under the European Green Week and the European Week of Regions and Cities 2020 in Brussels, where leading representatives of the European railway sector met.

In his speech, the marshal underlined the role and contribution of the railway into social and economic development of the European regions. He also paid attention to challenges ahead of the European railway and referred to the recommendations of the Committee of the Regions, in which he performs the role of the rapporteur.

– Rail is one of the most sustainable, energy-saving and safest means of transport. If we want to think of achieving climate neutrality in real terms, we must promote and invest greater funds in its development – said marshal Stawiarski. Announcing the year 2021 European Year of Rail and active involvement of all the interested parties, i.e state and regional authorities, is a chance for an essential progress in improvement of railway system in the European Union – he added.

During the meeting, a question was asked about rail dimension of the investment concerning the Central Communication Port as the flagship Polish infrastructure project. According to marshal Stawiarski,

development of this rail network will create an attractive alternative for domestic short-term flights in Poland.

European Week of Regions and Cities is the biggest annual event in Brussels dedicated to regional policy.
